The Peddler’s Progress

The Garden Peddler is the person and ideal behind a sustainable way of living.  TGP represents the umbrella of an “evolving garden project” which includes our homestead encompassing vermiculture (worm farming), our chickens, our market garden and our commitment to organic practices.

Peddler Farms is our commitment to Jersey Fresh produce gathered and delivered from around the state and brought to you directly through our “road-side” market, our Community Supported Agriculture program and our attendance at local farm markets.

I’ve told the story elsewhere in this epic tale of the Push of the Peddler, it began in an instant. KA-POW! …but it began with a question. I won’t tell you the question I asked, but you know when you ask it. And so the story goes… in an instant the question was answered. “Follow this path..” the answer came. Although the answer came in one thought, it now spans a continued thought over three years. It has truly come to be that the JOURNEY is the fun part. The destination is.. well.. the dirt. So the Journey of the Peddler, above the dirt, continues. In the SPRING of 2020 we open the doors to our retail location on Washington Ave in Woodbine and we roll out our new CSA & Buyers Club while maintaining our place at the Brigantine, Linwood and Stone Harbor markets. If you’re looking for the CSA, jump over HERE.

The pleasure of going back over just the first couple of years is how the process begins to snowball. It began with a couple chickens and has taken on a sort of chicken life-style. We inherited a shed from a friend. I drove it to the “homestead” on a trailer stacked flat. I don’t recommend it for the faint at heart. Anyway, we reconstructed it here and partitioned half of it off for the chickens. I gained storage and the girls got some shelter. The chicken’s digs are far more accommodating than any poultry farm. Its hardly for profit but for the joy.. 2017… 2020…

It began with a few plants that I would winter over in the back sun room. Now I have the neighbors trees wintering over in a forty foot hoop-house I built last Spring. The actual workable plot that I grow in has expanded year after year and this past season was the most successful overall for growing. My first wack at a garden 3 years ago was a naive jungle of lettuce beside a small shed closer to the house. That plot now holds berries alone. The main grow space consists of flowers for my dear Mrs. Garden Peddler and friends and a variety of veggies… from corn to edamame Soy in 2019. This year with the Garden Stand opening, I’m going to focus in on a variety of heirloom tomatoes!

2017… 2020…

That very first Vision of The Garden Peddler evolved from my discovery of the composting worm. For several years now we have been importing worm cast from California. Over this past year, we decided to begin our own composting trials on site. That was and for the most part, still is the purpose of the hoop-house construction, but it will certainly lend to seeding this year as well.

The first worm beds… …and the place they call home
