The Garden Peddler™ wasn't always a farmer, but the first memories of fulfilling the needs of others dates back to the doorsteps of neighbor's, with home-made decorations for sale in the single digits of youth. Fast forward a life-time and here we are again, at your doorstep. Never have I found a more satisfying need to fulfill than "building" veggies with my own two hands and bringing them to hungry bellies! There is a Harmony, you see, with holding onto Mother Earth and becoming aware of Her moods and whims. As time goes on and seasons repeat, there has returned the old fashion way of telling the time and the seasons. Watching the Sun and translating the size of the Magnolia buds to last years bloom and whether this year they will be frosted.
The Narcissus (Daffodil) is befittingly the first to show itself on our property. The bulbs swelling from late Winter rain. With their extreme hardiness and tolerance for the cold they are sometimes left the only bit of green amidst the last of the Winter snowfall. Shortly after the Daffodils show themselves, next is one of my favorites in the gardens, the Bluebells. Sometimes called Spanish Hyacinth or Wood Hyacinth, you guessed it.. they fall in the family of the Hyacinth and are such a fantastic show as the temperatures begin to warm. I have been culling these bulbs out and spreading them around the property as they multiply and grow nice and thick in no time!
The chickens too, have a magnificent built-in clock. Its no exaggeration that it was as though they held a meeting one morning and said, "ok ladies, its time to get back to work". Within a day there were the first dozen eggs after a long, dormant December and January.
The soil is tilled. The coop is repaired. The fruit trees have their first fertilizer and the seeds are warming in the green house. It is with excitement, anticipation and sheer wonder that this is the cycle of life. We are so very fortunate to bear witness to such a dramatic and miraculous procession every day of every year. As if you had fingers enough to count the blessings.
And with that... let Us please be the hosts of yet another magnificent season! The Garden Peddler™, equipped with a brand new shoulder thanks to modern medicine, along with the wonders of nature bring you FLOWERS for SPRING and VEGETABLES for SUMMER!
